Workshops & Retreats

January 28th Saturday – Feathers! Feathers! Feathers! Lynne Fanthrope will continue to add to our knowledge and skill in machine quilting with this workshop all about sewing those graceful feathers. Cost; $15.00, Location: Upper Hall, Time: 9:30am – 3:45pm.

February 14th “Between the Meetings”, Val Smith and Cher Olson will guide us through playing with new ways to use gel pens, pencil crayons, felt pens, and inks on fabric. The ladies at the last retreat had such a good time with this and the rest of us don’t want to miss out! I’m told you can add this to your repertoire of techniques for various projects, including using it to make labels. If you have any pens, pencils, or inks, please bring them along. Location- main hall. Time- 1:00pm to 3:00pm. Cost: $5.00

February is Preemie Month – Workshops coming...

Hope to see you at the cutting and sewing days! This is an especially good opportunity for new quilters to learn the basics and to get to know other members. Both workshops are from 9:30am to 3:30pm. We have a great time so come out and join us!

Saturday, February 18th. – cutting out kits
Saturday February 25th. – sewing

March 13th, “Between the Meetings”- Our own, Barb Baker, will share with us how to do that lovely hand appliqué that she is so expert at. She will give us instructions and have us practice on a sample piece. There are a few supplies to bring so please be sure to pick up a supply list. Maybe with her help, one of our quilts might win “Best of Show” too! Location; main hall. Time 1:00pm. to 3:00pm. Cost: $5.00

March 17th, Saturday – Come join us for a day of fun in this workshop with Dougal Walker and her “Bird Brain” wall hanging. This whimsical appliqué pattern should give us a few smiles and allow us to add our own personal creative touches as well. Location; upper room. Time: 9:30am – 3:45pm. Cost: $15.00 for the class and $12.50 for the pattern. Optional Kit for fancy yarns for nesting material– $2.00

March 24th, Saturday – Rediscover the joy of hand stitching with Dianne Stevenson, whether you are new to hand quilting or honing your skills. Learn about all the variables that make your stitching a success. Location- upper room. Time-9:30am to 3:45pm. Cost: $20.00. Maximum 15 students. All skill levels.

April 10th – “Between the Meetings”, Judy Leslie, Cher Olson, and Lynne Fanthrope will again host our “Rubbing Our Brains Together” session. This is a time when your quilting problems get shared and discussed, techniques and patterns get figured out, and designs get constructively critiqued. Those that have attended our previous two sessions have found them to be very easy going and the feedback useful. It is a great mentoring opportunity. Location- main hall. Time- 1:00pm to 3:00pm. Cost: $5.00

April 14th Saturday – Bonnie Hwang will be here with her lovely pattern, which is a variation of the Double Wedding ring design. Originally from Taiwan, Bonnie, learned to quilt by correspondence from a Japanese quilt magazine. She now designs patterns and gives workshops
throughout the lower mainland. You may remember her presentation a few years ago when she brought a few of her many purses. An enthusiastic teacher, her workshops really inspire and make quilting fun. A sample of this quilt can be seen in the Richmond “Fabricana” store. Location; upper room. Time: 9:30am- 3:45pm. Class Cost: TBA Pattern cost: TBA

May 12th, Saturday –“Departure”–innovative, easy curved piecing workshop with Judy Farrow. This workshop is designed to add free form curved piecing to your quilting vocabulary. Recommended for quilters who are ready to push the envelope and move beyond the boundaries of the traditional block or prescribed patterns. With bold fabric the techniques produce abstract
designs that are strong statements in their own right. Using fabrics of similar value produces
wonderful backgrounds just calling out for embellishment. Embellishment options will be discussed. Warning- People that have taken this workshop say that it is addictive! Location: TBA Cost: TBA . All skill levels.

FYI- We have booked Corinne Zerr for September and Susan Purney Mark for October. Maureen Wood has also agreed to teach her spectacular Christmas tree wallhanging again for us in the fall.
Details to follow.

Please be ready to start your workshops at 9:30am., with your sewing machine etc. all set up, so the teachers can start the class on time. We must be cleaned up and out of the hall now at 3:45pm. each day. All classes include tea/coffee and goodies. We remind you to bring your own cup so that we can reduce the use of styrofoam cups. Thank you.

October 14 - 16, 2011

31 stitchin' witches met for a fun filled 3 days at Harrison Hot Springs. We collected over 30 blocks of cats, ghosts, and pumpkins. Donna Mae volunteered to put them all together – hopefully there will enough for three cuddle quilts for Canuck Place. Thank you Donna Mae!

Val and Cher got us to think outside the box regarding gel pens. Thanks ladies!

Becky taught us the 10 minute block - we're expecting more than a few preemie quilts using this technique. Thanks Beckie!

We also managed to fill two pillows with scraps for the homeless. Merla and I have had a blast co-chairing this event for the past couple of years. Time to turn it over to others members. The retreat is booked for the next two years – October 12 – 14, 2012 and October 12 – 14, 2013.

The new co-chairs are Lynne Fanthorpe and Cathy Galbraith. Thank you both for stepping up!
Thanks to all who attended, sharing your skills, donating door prizes, and most of all
bringing your smiles and friendship.

Thank you ,
Daisy and Merla

HARRISON HOT SPRINGS FALL RETREAT 2010

Twenty-six of us attended "Santa's Quiltshop" Oct 15 - 17, 2010. We made thirty-four children’s Christmas pillowcases and twenty-two quilted Christmas ornaments to give to Ronald McDonald House and Canuck Place.

We all had a wonderful time! The weather was great, the camaraderie was wonderful, the food was excellent, the door prizes plentiful, and the hot tubs relaxing!

Thanks to our "demo" ladies - Tricia Brown for her pillowcase techniques, Nancy Chan for her magic binding, Sandi Bajcar for her 3-D Christmas tree and patterns, and Mary Shore's impromptu demo on how to measure ends of binding so it fits perfectly. Everyone was so generous with their time and knowledge. A special thank you to all who attended - you really made our first attempt a very rewarding experience.

Thanks,
Merla and Daisy
