Quilt of Belonging
A 36-metre tapestry portraying the rich cultural legacies of all the Aboriginal peoples in Canada and every nation in the world. January 23–April 4

Appliquéd butterfly wings, beaded silk, African mud cloth and Salish weaving are a few of the materials and techniques used to make the Quilt of Belonging tapestry a masterpiece of textile artistry. Crafted by many hands, this 36 metre long by 3.5 metre high work of textile art reflects Canada’s extraordinary talent, expansive cultural diversity and vast geography. Quilt of Belonging began in 1998 with the vision of Ontario visual artist Esther Bryan, and grew to involve hundreds of volunteers. The Quilt is inclusive; every fabric, colour, design and tradition is welcomed. Central to the quilt’s design are 263 hexagonal shapes, crafted by Canadians using unique materials and images to represent their rich cultural heritage. These unique blocks, when stitched together, form one tapestry that expresses ‘a place for all’.

Frank Shebageget: Model Life
Wondrous miniature accumulations explore community and nationhood through the materials of house and home. January 23–April 4

This Ottawa-based artist’s wondrous miniature sculpture and drawing explore the boundaries between the planning model and the model replica, community and nation. Through the skillful assembly of everyday building materials Shebageget creates finely detailed artworks that point to the ever present role of shelter and transportation in building and dividing communities. Model Life presents both new and older artworks that reposition notions of community and shared identity in both contemporary First Nations life and beyond. Model Life marks this Anishinabe artist’s premiere West Coast solo exhibition.

Ruth Scheuing: Silkroads
Examining the myth and metaphor of the Silk Road, this residency-exhibition project presents a combination of ancient textile techniques and computer-aided technologies.
January 23–April 4

In Surrey Art Gallery’s TechLab, Scheuing will create a space that functions simultaneously as a shop window, contemporary gallery display, artist’s studio and factory floor. Working on one of only six computerized Jacquard looms in Canada, Scheuing constructs woven blankets that layer the patterns and geography of this important historic trade route across Asia with key historical textile designs that were instrumental in bridging the cultures and economies of East and West. Visitors are invited to drop in to the TechLab on Thursday mornings and Saturday afternoons when Scheuing will be working on the loom.

These exhibitions are presented concurrently with Me and My World: Art by Surrey Secondary Students.
