APRIL MESSAGE FROM THE SHOW CHAIRPERSON |
|
| Quilt
show planning starts quite slowly with hall rental, date selection,
name, and logo taking place a few months after the previous show. The
core of the committee will be involved in these decisions. We then go
quiet for a few months with a few decisions made at show meetings and
the overall “feel” of the show developing. We are now, when you get this newsletter, just over a month away. There are still many things for each member to do to make the show successful. First if you haven’t had the opportunity to sign up for a volunteer shift you can either contact Beckie Stewart directly or check for openings on the volunteers sheets at the April meeting. Remember if you volunteer at the show for any shift you get into the show free. It hasn’t been mentioned recently, but men will be admitted to the show free too, so here is your opportunity to persuade your spouse to come for a quick look, we would love to see him there. Second there was a sign up sheet at the last meeting for people to bring goodies for the tea room. We would love cookies and bars to add to the sandwiches that will be available in the tea room. Carmie and Sue will have that sheet at the next meeting too. That busy pair are also managing the raffle quilts and tickets. Third get that quilt registered. We are extending registration to the April 14th meetings. The details will be in the registrar information, or check the website. You have until the May meeting to get the quilt finished. |
Fourth there is
the Boutique. Quilts, quilted items, and quilt related items are all
acceptable for sale in the member’s boutique. Theresa Peters will have
boutique forms at the next meeting and items must be ready for the May
meeting. If you are having trouble putting a price on that quilt Theresa
also has a list of suggested prices prepared by Loraine Burchill and
Betty Mensinger. A quilt hung in the show may also be for sale, just
make sure you put the information on the registration form. Finally there is the Publicity. We have quarter page flyers that also have an entry for a prize draw if they are brought to the show. These flyers will not be available at the show. The more posters and flyers that are out there, the more people know about the show, the more people will come to the show. Your May newsletter will have a page with all the show information including a map and a list of demos and the time they will be presented. You will be able to keep the page separate and bring it with you to the show. Show pins are still available for $3.00 see Vivia in the day and me in the evening. They will also be available at the next meeting and of course at the show. Lynne Fanthorpe, Show Chair

HANGING SLEEVES |
VOLUNTEERS FOR THE SHOW |
||||||
|
As you know all quilts that go into the show must have a hanging sleeve. The sleeve must be the width of the quilt (leave about one inch at each end) and must be wide enough to accommodate a large dowel. A finished size of 4 inches is sufficient. Here is what I do for a removable sleeve for a bed quilt. Cut a piece of fabric 9 inches wide and the same width as the quilt. Hem the short ends, this will make the finished sleeve enough shorter than the quilt to keep the dowel from showing. Put the fabric wrong sides together and sew a quarter inch seam down the long side. Press the sleeve with the seam in the centre of the back of the sleeve. I then roll the bottom edge up about half an inch and repress the bottom edge. This gives the sleeve the fullness to accommodate a dowel without distorting the quilt. Attach the sleeve to the finished quilt by pinning the sleeve to the back of the quilt with the top edge just slightly below the edge of the quilt. Pin well then with invisible thread in the top of your sewing machine and a bobbin thread that contrasts to the sleeve sew in the ditch of the binding using a large almost basting stitch. Hand sew the bottom edge with a large running stitch and again I use contrasting thread. I remove the sleeve following the show and save them for the next time. I have quite a collection of sleeves that have been in several shows. On occasion I will use two shorter sleeves if that is what fits the quilt but if you do that please don’t leave more than and inch or so between the two sleeves. When hanging quilts we use a combination of Guild owned dowels and ones supplied by the company that provides the stands and drapes. Smaller quilts are hung with flat wooden rods that are about 2 inches wide and some of the very small quilts have a 1 inch wide flat wooden rod. A tiny quilt does not need a 4 inch sleeve but it is better to have a sleeve that is bigger than the hanging rod rather than the other way around!
